Visiting the Twin Cities
Though winter weather lingers in the Twin Cities area, local event calendars in communities from Minneapolis and St. Paul to White Bear Lake and Coon Rapids begin to fill with all sorts of spring fun. For now, cold-weather outdoor activities abound in the form of skiing, sledding, and ice fishing, but as the snow melts, visiting families are invited to join in a wealth of special events, festivals, sports, and more.
Area football fans may still be mourning the crushing playoff loss of the Minnesota Vikings – in a game decided by a missed field goal by Minnesota kicker Blair Walsh – but basketball fans know the Minnesota Timberwolves are in the climactic second half of the 2015-16 NBA season. Check the schedule during your stay and catch a Timberwolves game at Target Center – it could be your last chance to see the legendary Kevin Garnett in action before he retires.
In neighboring St. Paul, the Minnesota Wild host NHL action at the Xcel Energy Center at the Saint Paul RiverCentre several nights a week. Hockey fans will delight in the action as the Wild battle it out in this season’s tight playoff race. Both the NHL and NBA seasons go through mid-April.
On March 26th and 27th, the 2016 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey West Regional brings some of the best men’s hockey teams in the nation to the Xcel Energy Center to compete in a two-day playoff. Specific face off times have yet to be determined.
For a little athletic fun of your own – not to mention a chance to make the most of what’s left of ski season – check out the the 2016 City of Lakes Loppet Ski Festival, February 5th through 7th. The event invites skiers of all ages to strap in and make their way from Theodore Park to uptown Minneapolis, while spectators enjoy a variety of sideline festivities.
The 2016 Hot Dash 5K & 10K is a great way to warm up in downtown Minneapolis on March 19th. Runners of all ages and skill levels make their way along scenic 5K and 10K courses before joining in the post-race party, complete with fireside pits. Get to the intersection of Main Street and 3rd Avenue early to get your stretches in – the races start at 9 a.m.
The Twin Cities are known for their vibrant arts scenes, and this season promises plenty of ways to get into it. On March 18th, the 2016 Downtown St. Cloud Art Crawl sees 35 downtown St. Cloud venues and galleries open with a colorful variety of showings. Then, April 22nd through 24th, the 2016 Spring St. Paul Art Crawl showcases the works of hundreds of local and regional artists. The 25th St. Paul Art Crawl starts at 6 p.m. Friday, and noon Saturday and Sunday.
