Visiting Twin Cities

Greater Minneapolis and St. Paul, along with surrounding communities, offer seemingly endless fun winter events and activities. Indoor at Bloomington’s Mall of America, or outdoors on the slopes of Buck Hill Ski Area in Burnsville, enjoy the season in the Twin Cities. Outdoor enthusiasts remember cross-country skiers age 16 and over must have a Minnesota ski pass to enjoy the trails in Minnesota State Parks and Forests. The passes are issued by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The communities surrounding the Twin Cities offer winter sports enthusiasts an abundant terrain for outdoor fun. Enjoy winter in the greater Twin Cities region, from Coon Rapids and the Anoka County Parks and Recreation, south to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.

Visitors arriving in the twin cities by air at Minneapolis - St. Paul International Airport Lindbergh Terminal, are across I-494 from the Mall of America – no worries if you forgot anything, as long as you have your wallet you’re in a good spot.

Twenty miles directly south from downtown Minneapolis on 1-35, winter sports enthusiasts find fun skiing, boarding and tubing on the slopes of Buck Hill in Burnsville. Boarders, be sure to visit on Thursday for the Thursday Throwdown Snowboard Series throughout the season. The Buck Hill Airbag Jump is open January 19th through 21st – let your inner daredevil go on the 15-foot jump with an airbag landing.

The Burnsville Performing Arts Center is home to the Dakota Valley Symphony. Now amidst the 2012-2013 performance season, Dakota Valley Symphony concerts offer a wonderful indoor option when its cold outside. Music lovers enjoy Grieg Meets Verdi on February 10th, and The Archangel: Corelli and Friends on March 17th. The winners of the 6th Annual Young Artists competition in January perform the Young Artists Concert at the end of April.

Chaska, west of Bloomington, is home to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. An extension of the University of Minnesota’s Department of Horticulture Science, the arboretum features cross-country ski and snowshoe trails for winter fun. Rent equipment at the Minnesota Arboretum and enjoy 11 miles of groomed trails, featuring terrain for all ages and experience levels. Join family and friends at the Minnesota Arboretum for some outdoor winter fun.

The community of Coon Rapids, located north of downtown Minneapolis, offers a variety of opportunities for winter outdoor activities. The Anoka County Parks and Recreation offers cross-country skiing and snowshoeing at Bunker Hills Regional Park, Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park and Chomonix Golf Course. Skijoring is also available at Bunker Hills Regional Park – unfortunately dog teams are not available for hire, but if you’ve got at dog that will pull you, this is the place.
