As Minnesota's winter festival season winds down, snowmobilers are making the last tracks in the Northwoods, and skijoring lessons in Grand Marais may have to wait for next year. All too soon, the Grand Rapids Community BBQ, marking the beginning of fishing season, will be here.
George Washington Pines Ski Trail north of Grand Marais hosts the 2014 Best in Snow Skijor Race March 1st. Events feature two mile and four mile races with one dog per skier. Geared for skiers of all levels, including beginners, The 2014 Best in Snow is the inaugural event, and is presented by Go Dog North Shore.
Twenty miles south of Grand Marais, Lutsen Mountains celebrates the arrival of spring with March and April 2014 events. DuLutsen takes place March 21st through 24th, featuring a showcase of Duluth’s top musicians. Musician’s travel from Duluth, located 90 miles southwest on the Lake Superior shore. Spring Carnival at Lutsen Mountains is March 29th followed by Sweetwater Shakedown April 3rd through 5th. Mountain Meltdown, April 12th and 13th closes the 2014 season on April 12th and 13th.
The Northwoods of Minnesota is prime snowmobiling country. Thief River Falls is a gateway to over 500 miles of groomed trails, and over 1,500 interconnecting northern Minnesota trails. While to snow pack remains, enjoy an adventure through northern Minnesota’s Northwoods.
Rochester, home of the Mayo Clinic, takes the fun inside for spring at the 19th Annual Rochester International Film Festival, early May. Presented by the Rochester International Film Group in collaboration with the University Film Society, the Rochester Minnesota International Film Festival is the place to be for southeastern Minnesota film enthusiasts.
By May, the weather is warm and trails mostly dry for the Thief River Falls Triathlon. The 29th TRF Sanford Health triathlon is May 17th 2014, with the start at Franklin Middle School. Events feature the marathon and the 23rd Annual Hugo’s Kid’s Triathlon. The pool swim course has five start waves – and remember your helmet for the bike portion.
Seven Clans Casino hosts the 10th Annual Memorial Day Pow-Wow, May 23rd and 24th. The 2014 Pow-Wow is a festival of Native American culture featuring drumming, singing, and dance competitions. Held on the grounds of Seven Clans, welcome summer with Native American traditions.
