Visiting Minnesota

Call it Thief River or TRF, by any nickname Thief River Falls is a beautiful summer destination. Conveniently located at the confluence of the Red Lake River and Thief River, and trunk highways 1, 32, and 59 TRF is an easy drive along scenic roadways. Visit Thief River in July and enjoy the 2013 Pennington County Fair, July 17th through 21st. Experience Thunder on Hooves the 19th & 20th with PBR’s Pro Bull Riding tour.

Southeast of TRF, Bemidji calls itself the First City on the Mississippi. Taking advantage of the Fourth of July holiday and great summer weather, Bemidji Jaycees hosts the 2013 Water Carnival July 3rd through July 7th. Marking the 69th Annual Bemidji Jaycees Water Carnival, 2013 event highlights include fireworks on the 4th and a Sunday afternoon parade on the 7th.

The 2013 Bemidji Dragon Boat Festival livens up the August calendar with events at Lake Bemidji. The 8th annual Lake Bemidji Dragon Boat Festival takes place July 31st through august 3rd. Festivities include a taco dinner hosted by Northern Minnesota’s Sanford Health Foundation, the 3rd Annual Dragon Boat Cornhole Tournament, and evening entertainment.

Grand Marais in far northeast Minnesota is a summer outdoor playground. Located on the shores of Lake Superior, the region is ideal for exploring the coastline of the lake by canoe and kayak. Anglers fish the big lake for salmon and herring, or cast their lines in inland lakes for lake and rainbow trout.

Celebrate the 10th anniversary of the North Shore Dragon Boat Festival July 26th to 28th, or visit the weekend after Labor Day Weekend for the Radio Waves Music Festival. North Shore Community Radio and the North Shore Music Association present the 2013 festival the weekend of September 7th and 8th. Join the best of North Shore musicians and artists for a weekend of family fun at Sweetheart’s Bluff at the west end of Grand Marais Recreation Area.

The west central Minnesota community of Detroit Lakes is in the heart of Minnesota lake country. The community celebrates the 78th annual Water Carnival July 12th to 21st. Visitors to the 0213 Detroit Lakes celebration enjoy water fights, a Sunday parade, music and plenty of food.
