Visiting Minnesota

As Minnesota emerges from the cold of winter into spring, activities transition from snowmobiling, hockey and cross country skiing to spring festivals, fishing derby’s and mountain biking. Albert Lea celebrates its history and culture at Taste of Heritage Festival in April at Northbridge Mall. Shakopee celebrates the season at the 2013 Spring Festival, an Arts & Crafts Affair in April. May’s Cannon River Fur Trade Rendezvous offers a glimpse into Minnesota’s historic fur trade. While the Hutchinson community looks forward to June’s Hutchinson Jaycee Water Carnival featuring the Grande Day Parade, Run by the River and Medallion Hunt.

Bid spring farewell at the 29th running of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon. The 2013 event date has changed, with events beginning in Duluth on March 9th with the race start on March 10th at Jean Duluth and Riley Roads. This spring dog sled race is an ideal opportunity to witness the excitement of sled dog racing. Be sure to join the finish line festivities at Billy’s all day and the evening Red Lantern Party on March 13th.

Becker County and the Detroit Lakes area is at the geographic transition of tall grass prairie, northern hardwood and coniferous ecosystems – an ideal mix for springs Festival of Birds. The 16th Annual Festival of Birds is May 16th through 19th in Detroit Lakes. The 2013 Detroit Lakes Festival of Birds kicks off with speaker Carrol Henderson followed by festival events including guided field trips, presentations and the Birder’s Bazaar.

The 2013 Street Faire at Detroit Lakes launches summer fun May 31st and June 1st. The first big event of the Detroit Lakes summer season features over 125 artist tents including paintings, pottery and jewelry. Entertainment features live music and a Friday night street dance. Bring the family; the faire features carnival rides and fun for the whole family, including the kids.

The Rochester International Association hosts the 2013 Rochester World Festival, April 12th and 13th at John Marshall High School. Get a glimpse of world culture with performances, world food and vendors featuring global goods. The 38th Annual Rochester World Festival features a talent show, children’s activities and exhibits.

Put your spring training to the test at the 2013 Med-City Marathon. The 18th Annual Med-City Marathon events take place May 25th and 26th. The Mayo Civic Center Exhibit Hall hosts Saturday events including the Med City Kids’ Marathon, diaper dash and toddler trot, along with the Med City Fitness Expo. The point-to-point course starts in the community of Byron, west of downtown Rochester where the race finishes.
