Visiting Minnesota

Winter in Minnesota means cold weather fun. With the cold comes cool events and great outdoor activities. Bemidji fills will festivities in January, for 2013 Brrrmidji Polar Daze events, including the 5K Polar Challenge, Beaver Hockey and the Minnesota tradition of a dive in the lake. South in Albert Lea, the community celebrates the season at The Big Freeze with classic Minnesota wintertime fun. Duluth looks beyond winter into spring, with the 2013 Duluth Boat, Sports Travel & RV Show, now in its 47th year - enjoy winter and make plans for your spring and summer fun at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center in February.

Celebrate a southern Minnesota winter in Rochester, the heart of Mississippi Bluff Country. Rochester WinterFest XI is January 31st through February 10th, filling southern Minnesota with winter activity. The 2013 WinterFest features events including SocialICE at Peace Plaza in downtown Rochester with the ICE Bar & Wall of ICE; Whistle Binkies Pubs' 2013 Polar Bear Plunge, Frozen Turkey Bowling and Lutefisk eating contest; along with the Rochester Eagles Club SnoBall Softball Tournament – there’s a lot of winter fun at Rochester WinterFest XI.

Northwest Minnesota is home to the Land of 10,000 Lakes' largest lakes and the headwaters of the Mississippi River. Communities from Thief River Falls and Bemidji to Detroit Lakes and Fergus Falls, celebrate winter snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and ice fishing. In winter, ice fishing huts dot the frozen waters surrounding Detroit Lakes and the communities of northern Minnesota.

February’s Polar Fest celebration is Detroit Lakes' official winter festival. The 2013 Polar Fest returns February 8th through the 17th with the Lakes Curling Club Bonspiel, the Poles ‘n Holes Fishing derby and Frozen Bowling. Take the fun indoors with The Polar Putt at the Washington Square Mall, the Polar-rific Spaghetti Dinner at M State and the Secrets of Pairings Wine Tasting, at the Best Western Premier. Join family and friends for tailgating at the lake, winter fireworks and the party at the Detroit Lakes Pavilion – it’s all about fun in winter.

Thief River Falls, 12 miles south of the Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge, is a snowmobiling gateway to far Northern Minnesota. Snowmobilers along the Wapiti Trail find Thief River Falls a warm and convenient rest stop. Come spring, Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge is a premier birding destination.

The area is located midway along Minnesota’s first birding trail, with over 280 species of birds spotted in and around Thief River Falls. Minnesota’s Pine to Prairie Birding Trail runs north to south, along a 223-mile route from Lake of the Woods south to Detroit Lakes and Fergus Falls.
