Take advantage of Minnesota’s beautiful fall weather to get outside and enjoy your favorite sports and last of season activities. Northern Minnesota is home to the headwaters of the Mississippi River, Minnesota’s North Woods and Minnesota’s Rivers and Lakes region. Travel south through Fergus Fall and Detroit Lakes in the heart of the state to Mankato in Minnesota’s River Valley and Albert Lea near the Southern Lakes. Take a Labor Day challenge and head for Grand Marais and the Sawtooth Mountain Bike Challenge. Events are gear for all ages and abilities and distances range from 6 to 21 miles. Races begin in downtown Grand Marais and climb the trails of the Pincushion Mountain Recreation Area. The Superior Cycling Association sponsors the Sawtooth Mountain Bike Challenge for a wonderful weekend on the north shores of Lake Superior.
Duluth, southwest of Grand Marais, also on the shores of Lake Superior hosts September’s Duluth Airshow. Returning to Duluth for 2012, the airshow is September 22nd and 23rd. On the ground exhibits include Marine, Air Force and Navy planes along with helicopters, a Lear Jet and even a FedEx 757. The excitement in the air includes the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, US Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, along with numerous single plane performances – a great weekend to visit Duluth.
Visit Duluth September 9th for an end of summer training challenge. Duluth hosts the Minnesota Mile road race. The 2012 categories include races for all ages and abilities on courses through downtown Duluth. Part of Minnesota’s Grandma Marathon events, test your training regime at Grandma’s Minnesota Mile challenge in Duluth.
Fergus Falls, in north central Minnesota hosts the Viking Challenge mid September. It is only a 5K race, however the course is an extreme wilderness course. Maneuver the Mud at the Viking Challenge along the course in the Otter Rail County Lakes region. The 2012 Viking Challenge run is September 15th. Compete, or run for fun; run alone, in a team or with family – however you complete the race it is an adventure like no other. Stick around after the race for Saturday evening music, food and bonfire.
After a successful inaugural event the Mankato River Ramble returns for 2012. This bicycle event features scenic courses on paved off-road trails and country roads. Choose a 12, 26 or 42-mile ride with rest stops complete with music and refreshments. Riders enjoy a ride across the Red Jacket Railroad Trestle with views of the LeSueur River. The Mankato River Ramble is October 7th – enjoy a fall ride through scenic southern Minnesota.
