It is the season to explore Minnesota. Called the Land of 10,00 Lakes, summer is the time to enjoy Minnesota's outdoors, events and festivals. From Mankato, Albert Lea and Rochester in southern Minnesota, north to the North Shore of Lake Superior and Minnesota’s north woods, activities and adventures abound. Detroit Lakes in northwest Minnesota celebrates summer at July’s weeklong Water Carnival, topped off by the Parade of the Northwest. Meanwhile Albert Lea hosts August's Big Island Bar-B-Que State Championship at Freeborn County Fairgrounds. Whether its a getaway to Rochester’s Greek Fest, or any or all of Minnesota’s running or multi-sport challenges, it's time to enjoy summer 2012.
Summer challenge? There are plenty. Detroit Lakes hosts its 2012 Triathlon August 17th and 18th, including both Olympic distance and Sprint course events. No worries if these are too much, Friday’s events feature a 5K as well as a Kiddie Run – everyone in the family can participate. Races start and finish at the city of Detroit Lakes pavilion, situated on the shores of Detroit Lake. Join post race fun downtown and at the city beach after the races on Saturday.
Triathletes put Duluth on your July and August 2012 summer plans. With a variety of events, you may have to visit more than once. The Buzz Ryan Sprint Tri is a great beginner triathlon held at the Minnesota Power Pavilion at Island Lake, north of Duluth. Experience the beautiful lakes and woods surrounding Duluth on out and back courses of the Buzz Ryan Triathlon.
August’s calendar features the 26th Annual Brewhouse Triathlon, one of Minnesota’s oldest and most popular races. Held August 5th at the AAA golf and Beach Club on Pike Lake, events include both a short and long course. Bring the family early for the Root Beer Kids Triathlon on Saturday, August 4th. The race includes four age groups so everyone can join the fun. If you’ve not had enough yet, return to Duluth August 18th, for the 2012 Duluth Triathlon featuring half ironman distance events.
Rochester puts a different spin on the 2012 Eco Friendly Tri August, 12th. The race begins at Lake Zumbro, north of Rochester, with a 4.5 mile kayak paddle to the end of the lake and then continue down the Zumbro River to Camp Victory. The race continues with a 7-mile mountain bike ride through the woods of Camp Victory featuring a variety of terrain. The race ends with the 3.1-mile trail run through the Zumbro River Valley.
Inline skaters enjoy one of the US’ most scenic and exciting competitions on the North Shore of Lake Superior. The 2012 NorthShore Inline Marathon takes place September 15th featuring both the marathon and Inline Half Marathon. The course begins south of Two Harbors and follows Scenic Hwy 61, with the finish at Duluth Entertainment Convention Center.
